Kitchener Christkindl Market: Christmas Memories and New Traditions

Kitchener Christkindl Market Bringing Back Christmas Memories and starting New Traditions.

Christmas market in Frankfurt

Countdown to the 2016 Kitchener Christkindl Market >  December 1 to 4, 2016
Having German roots, Christmas Markets did belong to my favourite Holiday Traditions. A Sunday afternoon visit to the Christmas Market was always a highlight of the Holiday season.
Hundreds of small wooden vending booths decorated with evergreens and holiday lights would fill up our city’s market square. Inside, vendors who were selling  unique toys and gifts, unseen in other stores.
There were the most delicious smells of grilled sausages, freshly baked gingerbread hearts, waffles, toasted almonds and warm anise candy.
I hadn’t been to a German Christmas Market in over a decade and
was struck, when I found out that Kitchener, Ontario has been holding a Christkindl Market for over 14 years now.
How could I have missed that?
To my excuse we are living a 2 hour car drive away from Kitchener and maybe that’s why this event never made into local event listing.
My children had heard many stories about the magical German Christmas Markets and they agreed in a heartbeat that we had to take a drive up the 401 to check out this unique German Tradition.

The Christkindl Market is an located in front of City hall on King Street.
It  is a four-day, indoor and outdoor event that lights up the heart of downtown Kitchener with its holiday spirit.
An ice skating ring could be found adjacent to the Christkindl Market and families were enjoying a spin on the ice.

If you have the time, take a free tour of downtown Kitchener via horse‑drawn carriage rides.
Inside the Rotunda of Kitchener City Hall, you’ll find food booths with a variety of  traditional German specialties.

Make sure to try a German Schnitzel with fried Onions on a bun,  sausage with Sauerkraut or a delicious Goulash (a beef stew).
A German vendor explained to me that sausages were made in German tradition without the use of fillers and preservativesharibo bear
I was also delighted to see some of my Grandmother’s favourite soups, Pea soup and Potato soup.

Since it was lunch time when we arrived, we bought our sausages and schnitzels and headed inside, where we added some cream filled pastries from the Nougat Bakery Holiday to our meal selection.
The Christkindl Markt does offer an eating area in the cafeteria on the 10th floor, which also provides a beautiful view of the city.
The food was deliciously authentic and feeling very satisfied; we were now off to explore the Christmas Market.

The front entrance was welcoming visitors with a huge, festive decorated Christmas tree and the popular Haribo Bear (Haribo is the Maker of Gummie bears and German jelly candy) greeted us with free samples.

The Christkindl Market featured over 70 vendors on two floors of the building.
There were traditional German clothing, toys, handmade ornaments, nutcrackers, Christmas crafts from the Erzgebirge, jewellery and much more.

Don’t leave the Market without chosing one of the many authentic German baked goods and treats. I discovered all the popular ones like Marzipanstollen  Spitzkuchen and Lebkuchen and prices were lower better than at local European Specialty stores.

We bought packages of Lebkuchen (Gingerbread Hearts) covered with chocolate and they were so soft and fresh! I wish I had picked up more than 4 boxes.

Mingling with visitors, were the German Christkindl and her Angels, Knecht Ruprecht and Klaus the Organ Grinder. I stopped to say Hi and snap a picture!

Plan some extra time to take in some of the outside entertainment on the big stage, where visitiors are treated to German Dance groups and choirs like the  Folk Dancers, Schwaben Dancers , Donau Dancers and choir.

My children also enjoyed the Blacksmith Demonstrations and the Kid’s workshop , Blacksmith Demonstrations on Civic Square.

We had a fabulous time and are looking forward to visiting again next year.

Will you be attending a Christmas Market this year?

Kurt Adler Wooden Chimney Christmas Advent Calendar

The countdown to Christmas has started.
On of my favourite traditions as a child was opening our Advent calendars. Each morning, starting on December 1 my sister, and I got up and raced to our calendars to see what chocolate shape was to be found behind the door.  Stars, Christmas trees, bells and more, we loved the sweet surprise.

My children also enjoy their Advents calendars and especially for small children it shortens the wait till until Christmas.

Of course, you can purchase calendars now in every Grocery store.  They range from $1.25 at Dollar stores to $19 for exclusive Lindt chocolate ones. Even Lego and Playmobile Toy Calendars are now available (see below)
But much more unique and personal are homemade advent calendars, and they can be reused and handed down and become a family tradition.
You can craft an advent calendar from materials like wood, paper or fabric. There are virtually no limits to your creativity. It can be classic, simple or colourful and modern. Add numbered pouches, bags or boxes that can hold many types of small treats, an inspirational note, toys, or stickers.

I found some awesome and inspiring examples here and want to share some great ideas with you.
Make this year’s Advent extra special.

Santa Claus Parades in Ontario 2016 Check Cities, Dates and Times

The holiday season is very magical for children and many communities kick of the holiday season with their annual Santa Parade.
Most small and all large cities in Ontario are offering their own Santa Parades or Festival of Light Parades, starting as early as mid-November.
In smaller rural communities (like mine) the Santa Claus Parades are comprised of school floats, local marching bands, local Food Banks and community floats.  For several years, my children have helped decorate the floats for their schools and clubs and had the honour of being on one of the floats during the Parade.

If you live in a large city like Windsor or Toronto, your Parades may be  quite a bit more elaborate with professional decorations and balloon animation.
Small or big, I am sure the Parades mentioned will be enjoyed by everyone. Each year old and young are crowding the sidewalks, waiting to see  Santa and Mrs. Claus roll by in their sleigh, spreading a jolly Hohoho Christmas cheer.

Ontario Santa ParadesAre you looking to attend a Santa Parade in your area?  On my Events calendar page, you can find all the 2015 Parade dates and times.  If your city is not mentioned, please drop me a line, and I will gladly add it.
Please view the Events Calendar here. to get all the dates and times

Update: dates for the 2016 Santa Parades in Ontario keep coming in. Parades dates that are unconfirmed are marked with na. Please come back and check for updates on these cities and events.

To make locating your favourite Santa Parade easier we have decided to list Parades alphabetically rather than by dates. Simply scroll down to find your city.

My first bout with back problems started after our last move.
After packing, lifting and moving dozens upon dozens of boxes, it should have come as no surprise that my back went on a sudden and very painful “strike”. You know the feeling when it hurts to stand,  move or sit and don’t even try to get up!
I did grab a few acetaminophen, and they worked somewhat for the 4 hours or so. I was still fairly uncomfortable though especially at night.
Since I did not want to pop pill after pill, my pharmacist recommended the Robax HeatWraps with ThermaCare.
I prefer heat to ice when dealing with a sore back and have tried self-heating ointments, but did not like the odour and greasy feeling they left behind.
After applying, the Robax Heat wraps almost immediately relaxed my muscles and took my pain away.
I was amazed, at how fast and great the pads worked on this tough backache.
The heat from these pads is comfortable and not burning, and the wraps were hidden beneath clothing.
The first couple days I wore them through the day.
My favourite time to wear the heat wraps was at night, though, because they would provide pain relief all night.
Getting out of bed seemed a lot easier, after wearing the wraps, as my back muscles felt less stiff and not painful.
The Robax  HeatWraps even continued to provide pain relief for several hours after I removed them.
Since this time, I have used the Robax Heat wraps a few times and always an extra one in my medicine cabinet.
What’s your go-to remedy for dealing with back pain and have  you tried any heat wraps yet?

Platinum uses ibuprofen to relieve pain and methocarbamol to relax tense muscles. This pain reliever is useful for back pain, muscle spasms, tense neck muscles, and strains and sprains.

Robaxisal Extra Strength provides relief for the same muscles, but this capsule uses acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and methocarbamol for relief. ASA is more potent than ibuprofen and works for stronger back pain.

Robaxacet uses acetaminophen and methocarbamol for muscle relief. Robaxacet Extra Strength uses the same formula as Robaxacet but the doses are increased.

Robaxim is a muscle relaxant whose primary ingredient is methocarbamol.

Heat-wraps

The Lower Back & Hips and Neck & Shoulder wraps are effective for relieving minor back and muscle aches by using controlled heat. The heat wraps are active for eight hours, but most feel up to 16 hours of relief.

Truvia Sweetener Review and Free Sample
truvia

Sugar seems to be a big No-No these days when it comes to healthy eating and staying on track with keeping your optimal weight.
Even my doctor recommended cutting out sugar and using natural alternatives.
Browsing the store shelves at my local grocery store, my eyes fell on Truvia, a natural product made with Stevia.
I decided to visit their website and gather more information about this calorie free alternative.
To my great delight, I also discovered they are currently offering a free sampling opportunity, and I requested my free sachets asap.
I will share my experience with this product once my free trial arrives.

If you’d like to get in on the review, here is the link to order your free Truvia products

About Truvia

Truvia is a sugar substitute. It was a product that was developed by the Coca Cola Company and Cargill and launched in 2008. Truvia is made from leaf extracts of the stevia plant along with erythritol (a sugar alcohol) and natural flavours.

Truvia is marketed as a tabletop sweetener, for example – added to beverages like coffee – and it can also be used in recipes. You’ll also find Truvia as the main sweetener in a number of beverages on the market, including Vitamin Water, Sprite Green, All Sport Naturally Zero, Blue Sky Free, Crystal Light Pure, Zevia soda, and some varieties of Odwalla juices.

Products

Truvia makes three different products. They’re all really just Truvia, but the difference is in how it is packaged and what it will be used for. For sweetening foods and beverages there are Truvia packets/sachets. These are convenient for on the go use and come in 40 count and 80 count boxes.

The second option is Truvia Sponable. This is a jar packaging designed for use at home where you can spoon out and sprinkle the amount of Truvia you want. One third a teaspoon of Truvia spoonable is the equivalent to one teaspoon of sugar.

Finally, Truvia sells a Baking Blend which is a packet that combines Truvia with sugar to use in your recipes. Even though there is real sugar inside, Truvia Baking Blend contains 75% fewer calories than if you used all sugar.

Recipes

You’ll find that you can substitute Truvia Baking Blend for sugar in just about all of your favorite recipes, but I also wanted to point out that the Truvia website has an excellent recipes page. You can view the recipes here. The left side allows you to search recipes. You can also browse recipes by product (Truvia Natural Sweetener or Truvia Baking Blend), Course (Beverages & Smoothies, Bread & Muffins, Breakfast, Cakes, Cookies & Bars, Coctails, Desserts, Main Dishes, Salads, and Side Dishes).

Truvia’s Safety

Truvia is safe to eat for most people, but it is possible to experience an allergic reaction. For example, Truvia is made from stevia – an herb – and therefore may cause a reaction in people who are allergic to plants like ragweed.

Some people also experience gastrointestinal side effects when ingesting Truvia. These side effects are related to the sugar alcohol ingredient, erythritol. While up to 90% of erythritol is absorbed by the small intestine and excreted in urine, small amounts can reach the large intestine and cause gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating and cramps. The symptoms are mild and brief, but if you experience them you may have to limit how much Truvia you consume each day/week.

Where Can I Buy Truvia

For a list of stores that carry Truvia, visit this page.

Contacting Truvia

If you have a question or comment for Truvia, you can reach them by dialing 1-866-986-6077 or by sending an email to [email protected]
