Kitchener Christkindl Market: Christmas Memories and New Traditions

Kitchener Christkindl Market Bringing Back Christmas Memories and starting New Traditions.

Christmas market in Frankfurt

Countdown to the 2016 Kitchener Christkindl Market >  December 1 to 4, 2016
Having German roots, Christmas Markets did belong to my favourite Holiday Traditions. A Sunday afternoon visit to the Christmas Market was always a highlight of the Holiday season.
Hundreds of small wooden vending booths decorated with evergreens and holiday lights would fill up our city’s market square. Inside, vendors who were selling  unique toys and gifts, unseen in other stores.
There were the most delicious smells of grilled sausages, freshly baked gingerbread hearts, waffles, toasted almonds and warm anise candy.
I hadn’t been to a German Christmas Market in over a decade and
was struck, when I found out that Kitchener, Ontario has been holding a Christkindl Market for over 14 years now.
How could I have missed that?
To my excuse we are living a 2 hour car drive away from Kitchener and maybe that’s why this event never made into local event listing.
My children had heard many stories about the magical German Christmas Markets and they agreed in a heartbeat that we had to take a drive up the 401 to check out this unique German Tradition.

The Christkindl Market is an located in front of City hall on King Street.
It  is a four-day, indoor and outdoor event that lights up the heart of downtown Kitchener with its holiday spirit.
An ice skating ring could be found adjacent to the Christkindl Market and families were enjoying a spin on the ice.

If you have the time, take a free tour of downtown Kitchener via horse‑drawn carriage rides.
Inside the Rotunda of Kitchener City Hall, you’ll find food booths with a variety of  traditional German specialties.

Make sure to try a German Schnitzel with fried Onions on a bun,  sausage with Sauerkraut or a delicious Goulash (a beef stew).
A German vendor explained to me that sausages were made in German tradition without the use of fillers and preservativesharibo bear
I was also delighted to see some of my Grandmother’s favourite soups, Pea soup and Potato soup.

Since it was lunch time when we arrived, we bought our sausages and schnitzels and headed inside, where we added some cream filled pastries from the Nougat Bakery Holiday to our meal selection.
The Christkindl Markt does offer an eating area in the cafeteria on the 10th floor, which also provides a beautiful view of the city.
The food was deliciously authentic and feeling very satisfied; we were now off to explore the Christmas Market.

The front entrance was welcoming visitors with a huge, festive decorated Christmas tree and the popular Haribo Bear (Haribo is the Maker of Gummie bears and German jelly candy) greeted us with free samples.

The Christkindl Market featured over 70 vendors on two floors of the building.
There were traditional German clothing, toys, handmade ornaments, nutcrackers, Christmas crafts from the Erzgebirge, jewellery and much more.

Don’t leave the Market without chosing one of the many authentic German baked goods and treats. I discovered all the popular ones like Marzipanstollen  Spitzkuchen and Lebkuchen and prices were lower better than at local European Specialty stores.

We bought packages of Lebkuchen (Gingerbread Hearts) covered with chocolate and they were so soft and fresh! I wish I had picked up more than 4 boxes.

Mingling with visitors, were the German Christkindl and her Angels, Knecht Ruprecht and Klaus the Organ Grinder. I stopped to say Hi and snap a picture!

Plan some extra time to take in some of the outside entertainment on the big stage, where visitiors are treated to German Dance groups and choirs like the  Folk Dancers, Schwaben Dancers , Donau Dancers and choir.

My children also enjoyed the Blacksmith Demonstrations and the Kid’s workshop , Blacksmith Demonstrations on Civic Square.

We had a fabulous time and are looking forward to visiting again next year.

Will you be attending a Christmas Market this year?

Ontario Farmers Markets Guide – Best Tips How to Buy local Food & Produce

Guide to Farmers markets in Ontario by AngiesOntario.ca

Summer is almost over and the harvest is in full swing.

I have been visiting our local Farmers Market almost weekly since spring and if you did not have a chance to visit yours (yet),

I am telling you its absolutely worth it, and this is a great time to go and here is why you should not miss it.

Getting outside in the sunshine, browsing the stands, chatting with the farmers and enjoying local produce is an experience that cannot be topped. But a farmers market is nothing like a grocery store – and if you’re going to get the most from your visit you have to be prepared.

To help you out, I’ve created a list of tips that you should consider before your next trip to the farmers market. Some may be familiar to you, but I hope you’ll also find some new gems.

Preparing

1 – Know Your Seasons – Knowing when certain fruits and vegetables come into season will help you build expectations for what you will find at the market. This can help you plan ahead about what you may buy, what meals you will plan, and what recipes you will try out.

Not sure when produce seasons are? Check out this website: http://www.eattheseasons.com/ or Ontario.ca/foodland/availability-guide

2 – Comfortable Clothes & Shoes – Many farmers markets are located outside, so you should dress to be prepared for the elements. Wear comfortable clothes and if needed, keep a light jacket in the car just in case. Also, wear appropriate shoes so you’ll be comfortable when walking around.

ontario foodland guide from AngiesOntario

Expectations

3 – Rules – The rules about what is sold can vary from market to market, so you may encounter a number of situations – home grown, locally grown, organic, or bought and resold. If the rules for your farmers market are unclear, don’t be afraid to have a conversation with the seller at the market, so you can learn how the food was produced. Knowing how your food was grown is more informative than labels anyway.

4 – Price – I know we all love a bargain, but if you’re going to a farmers market hoping to see cheap prices, you’ll probably be disappointed. Farmers markets are about quality, freshness and knowing where your food comes, so you should have reasonable expectations about price.

What to Bring

5 – Bags – You’re doing a wonderful thing by supporting your local growers – now go just one little step further for the environment and bring your own bags. Reusable bags and totes are a good idea, and if you don’t have them, bring some plastic bags that you’ve saved. You may also consider bringing a cooler and leaving it in the car while you shop.

6 – Cash – Although you may be used to whipping out that debit or credit card for your purchases, your farmers market likely doesn’t have that technology. Be prepared by bringing cash with you, especially small bills.

7 – Kids – Shopping with kids can be tough, but a farmers market isn’t like shopping at your regular store, and many children enjoy the experience. Bring your kids along to enjoy the outdoors, pick out their own produce and get a real learning experience.

shopping at Farmers Markets

Tips on Shopping

8 – Go Early – For the best selection you may consider going to your farmers market when it first opens. You’ll have the most variety and the best pick – avoiding the possibility of items being sold out, which would happen if you go later. Going early can also help you beat the crowds. Typically the very beginning and very end of the farmers market hours are the least crowded.

9 – Browse Then Buy – It may be tempting to step up to the first stand and buy right away, but you’ll be better off waiting. Each grower will have a different selection and price – so browsing the entire market first will help you decide which stands to purchase from. As an added bonus, you won’t be lugging around a bag full of produce, which can be heavy and may contribute to produce bruising.

10 – Taste – Many farmers want you to try their produce before you buy it and therefore they’ll have some out for tasting. Don’t worry – you can try and not end up buying. This is your chance to find out what you like and what you don’t.

11 – Keep Track of Car Keys – Key are a common lost-and-found item, as you move from booth to booth and may set them down somewhere. Make sure to keep track, because finding where you left them can be difficult. Even better? Ditch the car and walk or bike to the market instead.

12 – Consider Buying in Bulk – When you buy in large quantities you’ll sometimes get a better price, satisfying your need to save. However, if you do buy in bulk, make sure you have a plan so nothing is wasted. You can preserve the food by freezing, canning, pickling, making jam or jelly, and in other ways.

Interested in preserving your food? Check out this page: http://nchfp.uga.edu/

13 – Try Something New – You’re going to see a huge selection of produce at the farmers market – familiar favorites as well as things you may have never seen or tried before. It’s a great opportunity to try something new and expand your palate.

14 – Take Your Time – Farmers markets aren’t like the regular grocery store that you want to rush in and get out as soon as you can. Take your time and enjoy your experience at the farmers market. Admire your surroundings, enjoy the weather, and chat with growers and other shoppers. This is a time to savor the moment.

food safety vegetables

Going Home

15 – Don’t Forget to Wash – As fresh and trusted as those fruits and vegetables are, it is still important that you properly wash everything before you eat it.

16 – Plan Your Meals – Take note of what you purchased at the farmers market and use it to plan meals that incorporate these items. Spread the items out for multiple meals throughout the week, but plan to use items that expire the fastest first.

Not sure of the expiration times of fresh fruits and vegetables? Find out on this website: http://www.stilltasty.com/

17 – Try a New Recipe – Many would say that the items you get at the farmers market are best with minimal processing – eat them raw or with simple prep such as boiling or tossing in the frying pan. However, it’s also fun to use those items to try a new recipe, so take a few minutes to browse online and discover something delicious.

Not sure what to make with your seasonal produce? Check out this guide: http://www.marthastewart.com/276955/seasonal-produce-recipe-guide

The tips above should help you get the most out of your next farmers market visit. Just in time too! Some farmers markets have already opened for the season, and others are set to open in the next week or two. My Family’s visit to Ripley’s Aquarium Toronto

If snorkeling in the Caribbean or swimming with the dolphins out of the question, this Toronto Attraction is the next best thing.
Visit Canada’s largest indoor aquarium and see an incredibly diverse and impressive array of marine animals.
Last March I had the pleasure to visit the Ripley’s Aquarium Toronto, and the Shark tunnel is fantastic and absolutely mesmerizing.
I would not want to come any closer to a shark than this. In our journey beneath the water, thousands of fish and dozens of sharks were swimming right over our heads, it was a breathtaking experience.
A moving walkway gently glides visitors through the Lagoon and Shark tunnel, and you have the chance to off along the way to take a picture, which we did – Plenty.
Ripley’s Aquarium contains over 5.7 million litres of water and has over 16,000-marine animals over a span of 12,500-square metres!

Kids and Adults alike will love to visit the LEGOLAND in Toronto, Ontario.

Explore, let your imagination run wild and create with LEGO like never before at the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre in Toronto!
The LEGOLAND Attraction is home to over 3 million LEGO bricks, and countless activities and possibilities!
There are also rides and a 4D cinema, as well as a LEGO interactive laser ride and a huge LEGO shop! My children grew up playing with Duplo toys first and then graduated to Lego. It’s great to see that a Duplo village is providing fun and entertainment for the smaller children.
Food and refreshments are available at the café.
This is a great attraction to visit during school breaks and on weekends.

2. Bring your own socks: I always bring a pair of socks for each child, when visiting a play zone. Kids are required to wear socks and bringing your own will save money.

The waterpark with it’s slides and wave pool is open during the summer months only. If you are planning on a longer stay, you can bring your tent or trailer and rent one of the campsites located beside the park.
All the indoor activities can be enjoyed throughout the year. We took our kids in the dead of winter and they enjoyed burning off some energy in the play gym and on the ropes course. All ages will enjoy the glow-in-the-dark golf course.
