Does buying BULK will save you money and is it cheaper to shop at stores like the Bulk Barn?

I love shopping at the Bulk Barn, not just for the occasional chocolate covered coffee beans, a delicious caffeine boost!
But also items like vitamins, dates, baking mixes, raisins, coconut flour and more.
One way to save is to check their flyer for advertised specials. And then use one of their $3 coupons for additional savings. (more below)

Unfortunately not everything bought in bulk is cheaper. For example, I had compared prices on almonds, quinoa, mixed nuts, coffee, bird seed, etc. and found that my local Costco store is significantly cheaper when it came to these items.
The same goes for cereals, where I often find a much better promotion on cereal boxes at my grocery store.
The lesson is to know the unit price per 100g or 100ml. These unit prices can be found on the Bulk Barn container, and you can also see them on store shelves at your local supermarket. Make sure to  compare your favorite grocery items per unit/price.
I  like to have a pen & paper in my purse so I can keep notes. You may also want to keep your receipt so you can check and compare prices later. One of the benefits of Bulk Barns is that you can purchase any amount.

This is great if you want to sample a product. If you have never tried dried a new food before, don’t spend money on a huge box, buy a piece or two for a taste check and see if you like it!

About Bulk Barn

Bulk Barn is the largest bulk food retailer in Canada. It was founded in 1982 and is headquartered in Aurora, Ontario. There are currently over 200 Bulk Barn stores, with locations in every province.

Bulk Barn sells all your favorite bulk foods, including candy, snacks, nuts, spices, salt & pepper, dried fruit, glazed fruit, sugar, flour, baking chocolate, mixes, baking ingredients, coffee & tea, drink mixes, cereals, seeds, items for candy making, items for cake decorating, fillings & spreads, rice & pasta, soup & beans, cookies, petfood, wild bird food, health food, vitamins, supplements, and a range of other products.

My Shopping List

Arguably the most innovative and helpful feature of the Bulk Barn website is the My Shopping List function. You can reach this function by clicking on the link in the upper right hand side of the home page. When you do, you can type the item you are looking for. For example, as I typed “chocolate” I then got a list of all the chocolate items sold at Bulk Barn. Selecting the one you want will add it to your shopping list, and when you’re done you can print the shopping list to take with you to the store.

Contacting Bulk Barn

If for some reason you need to reach a Bulk Barn customer service member with a question or a comment, you can do so by dialing 905-726-5000. They also have an email contact form here.

Conversion Calculator

Another very handy gadget on their website is the Conversion Calculator. You may have found a great sounding recipe but are not sure how to convert 200 degrees to fahrenheit or use metric measurements. Simply select from volume, or temperature or weight and enter your figure.
Then hit convert and voila  take out the guessing and get the correct number.

  1. Great question, Lousie.

Love buying candy at the Dollar stores myself. Don’t you find they have the best prices?

Although the coupon from the Bulk Barn (see above) comes in handy.
An extra $3 of free candy!

    Cheers, Angie

I’ve always wondered why, with all the candies you have, why you don’t sell those lollypops( like the ones they sell at Dollar Stores,( Bubble gum, Cotton Candy, Banana etc..) They’re50 cents. Also, why you don’t sell the Original Astro Pops.I’m a Grandmother and I have Grandkids and we love those lollypops.Even, myself…Feel Free to send me a case of each. if you want ….ahahah…lol.
