Tips

Much like the Recipes tab, the “Tips” page gives you different browsing options. Some times cover how to make dinner faster, how to stock your kitchen, and how to be creative with leftovers.

 

Offers 

Offers and perks include coupons for General Mills’ products and coupons on products by companies partnered with General Mills like Dairy Queen. Once you click on a coupon, you receive instructions on how to save money. For the Dairy Queen offer, you must purchase on of the participating cereals like Cheerios, Lucky Charms, or Almond Oatmeal Crisp. After that, you must cut out the coupons inside the package and redeem the coupon at participating locations.

Quick Chili Con Carne

As soon as the leaves fall, and the temperatures drop, I feel the need for a hot bowl of chili.

There is nothing better to warm you up on a cool day, than enjoying chili.

For dinner, I like to serve it with rice and a vegetable or salad.

Leftovers the next day  taste just as great or maybe even better and a few tortilla chips are great for dipping.

 

Ingredients for 4 to 6 servings
1 medium cooking onion
2 cloves of garlic
1 red pepper
2 tbsp oil
600 g mixed ground meat
salt to taste
pinch of cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp. dried rosemary
2 tbsp tomato paste
500 g tomatoes happened
1 can (425 ml) chunky tomatoes
2 tsp vegetable stock
1 can (425 ml) Corn
1 can (425 ml) kidney beans and baked beans
4 tbsp. sour cream

 

Directions

Wash peppers and cut into small pieces..
Peel onion and garlic cloves and chop finely.
Heat  the oil in a large saucepan.   Add the ground meat and fry on medium heat until brown.
Add salt, cayenne peppers and rosemary.

The mix in the onion, garlic and pepper and fry until soft.
Add the tomato paste., can of tomatoes and broth. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes.

In the meantime rinse and drain the kidney beans and corn and add them to the pan.
Cover and simmer for another 5-10 minutes.
I like to serve it with rice or tortilla chips.

To garnish you may top with sour cream, rosemary and chili pepper (optional)

Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Dinner Recipe Makeovers

Thousands of Canadian children and teens have grown up on weekly lunches of Kraft Dinners.
It’s also one of these super fast and inexpensive comfort foods that seem to keep university students alive!
Kraft Dinners, of course, consists of mainly pasta with a processed cheese sauce.
It’s a meal choice that makes many Dieticians cringe, but it’s not all bad.
If your children ask for KD dinners over and over again (gosh, my son had a phase like that!!)
here are some easy ideas I found to add some extra nutrition to this meal in a box.

Macaroni with Meatballs in Tomato Ricotta Sauce Recipe
Italian Macaroni Meatballs with Tomato Ricotta Sauce Recipe

Pasta dishes are always a favourite dinner choice for in our  family.
Pasta is so versatile  and paired with these meatballs it makes for a very inexpensive yet delicious family dish.
My children love pasta in any form and shape, and I like to serve Macaroni noodles with this recipe.
If your family prefers spaghetti or penne pasta (etc.) simply substitute.
Any Italian pasta works well with this dish.
The ricotta cheese gives the tomato sauce a rich, creamy flavour without being too heavy.

Use parmesan cheese as garnish if you wish.

 

 

Ingredients
salt
1 medium-sized onion
1-2 cloves of garlic
400 g mixed ground meat
pepper& salt  to taste
1 Tbsp oil
1 Tbsp tomato paste
1 tsp flour
1 can (425 ml) tomatoes in chunks
Thyme
400 g macaroni
100 g ricotta  cheese
sugar

optional Parmesan cheese
Preparation in 30 minutes
Fill a large pot with water.  Add 1/4 Tsp salt and bring water to a boil.
Meanwhile, peel and chop the onion and garlic cloves, divide in half.

Mix half of the chopped onion and garlic with ground beef.
Add salt and pepper and mix. Make 16 small meatballs.

Pour 1 Tbsp oil into the pan and fry patties over medium-high heat for
5 minutes.

Remove the meatballs from the frying pan and  keep warm

Add the remaining onion and garlic mix and fry until golden.
Mix in  tomato paste and flour. Heat up for a minute and pour in the 150ml water.
Add salt, pepper and thyme to taste.
Stir the tomato sauce and cover the pan and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.

Cook pasta in the boiling water for about 10 minutes, until al dente. Drain.

Add the ricotta cheese to the sauce.

Drain the pasta and serve with sauce and meatballs.

Have you tried a Raclette yet?
Raclette, the cozy, traditional Swiss dish is the perfect dinner feast for a social get-together with friends and families.
We occasionally enjoy a Raclette on cold winter evenings, on Christmas or New Year’s Eve.
Once you have tried a Raclette dinner it is easy to understand  it’s allure.
What I love about a Raclette dinner is, that you can prepare everything ahead of time. It’s nice to sit at the table and enjoy your company while dinner is cooking itself in front of everyone.

What is a Raclette?

A Raclette is essentially a tabletop grill with 8-12 individual pans.
Guest will each receive 1-2 small pans to fill with their favourites.

Best Cheese for Raclettes

Good cheeses for Raclette include varieties that melt quickly.
Buy special Raclette cheese if you can find it or use Mozzarella cheese and Gouda. For a stronger flavour, you can try Gorgonzola or blue cheese like Brie cheese.

To get started, everyone fills a pan with his/her favorite ingredients. Begin with meat (or fish), add veggies and top your creation with cheese.
Place your dish into the grill slots and let simmer until the cheese starts bubbling.
Remove and enjoy.

Ingredients for Raclette

Suitable ingredients for Raclette include all kinds of veggies such as mushrooms, peppers, zucchini, olives and onions. But there are also many fruits like pineapple, apple or peach that taste delicious with raclette cheese
And, of course, meats or even fish are a popular first ingredient placed in the bottom of the pans.

Side Dishes

Raclette may be served with a variety if breads, of potatoes, which can be heated on top of the Raclette grill.

Add homemade Garlic Butter.
Below are some delicious ideas how to fill a typical pan.
Combinations are endless!

Plan serving sizes

Also view recipes ideas bellow. You may wonder how much cheese, meat etc to buy when planning a Raclette dinner. Below are some suggested servings per person. Simply multiply by number of guests:

  • 150 g or 200 g of cheese
  •  100 -150g of meat
  • 100 g shrimp, tuna or other seafood (optional)
  • 200g vegetables
  • salad  (optional)
  • 100-150 g bread
  • 150g cooked (baby) potatoes (optional)

 

My tips:

Divide perishable items like cheese, seafood and meat. Leave them in fridge and refill dishes as needed.
That way any leftovers will not spoil and may be saved.

Recipes

1.Traditional Raclette for 6
1 kg sliced raclette cheese
12 small Potatoes
30 slices of deli meats. Get a combination of cooked ham, prosciutto and salami
one glass gherkins
one glass cocktail onions

1.Wash and cook potatoes in salted water for 20 minutes, depending on the size. Place on a well buttered oven dish plate on top the preheated Raclette grill.
2.Arrange cheese on a serving dish.
3.Place Meats on a second serving dish and garnish with gherkins and cocktail onions.
4.Have everyone add one slice deli Meat to pan, top with cheese and heat in grill.


2. Tex-Mex Raclette for 6

Ingredients:

  • Old El Paso Taco seasoning
  • 500g ground beef (cook and brown in frying pan first)
  • 600-800g Mozzarella or Cheddar cheese,
  • can of corn
  • can of beans
  • 2-4 green onions
  • green or black olives (optional)

1.Wash and cut green onions.
2.Prepare the ground meat with seasoning mix according to package. Add green onions and simmer until cooked. Put into serving bowl.
3.Drain cans of beans, corn, olives and place in individual serving bowls.
4.Shred the cheese and add to a serving dish.
5.Have guests fill their pans with meat mixture, then add corn, beans etc and finish with cheese. Add to grill.

Serve with a salad and tostitos, tortillas or nacho chips.


 

Asparagus pans (6 servings)

  • 1 1/2 Pinch of paprika
    600g cheese
    380g Asparagus

Wash the asparagus,cut ends and boil in salted water, drain when al dente and cut into bite-size pieces.
Layer the pieces in pan and top with cheese. Sprinkle with paprika powder. Insert in grill and melt.

Easy Pita Pizza Recipe

Krissy’s Super Easy Pita Pizza Recipe

Do you feel like having a freshly made pizza from scratch but don’ t have hours to prepare dinner?
How does Homemade pizza ready in 18 minutes sound?
This recipe includes preparation and baking!
My daughter Krissy was actually the one who came up with this scrumptious DIY Pizza recipe that is not only delicious, but unbelievable fast to make. The pitas make a nice thin crust that allows the toppings to take centre place
Since it was her idea, this dinner creation is appropriately named “Krissy pizzas” in our household.

Ingredients:
4 servings
4 pita pockets (Naan bread  work as well)
small jar of your favourite tomato pasta sauce
2 green onions

shredded cheese or grated cheese ( Mozarella, Marble Cheese)
olives (optional)
Instructions:

Grease a baking sheet (two if you cannot fit all 4 pitas onto one) and heat the oven to 375F.

In the meantime wash the green onions and cut into thin slices.
Drain and rinse olives,
Get a spoon for the tomato sauce and place shredded cheese on a plate.
Now comes the fun part. My children and I like do “decorate our own pizzas.
We each take turn spreading  pasta sauce onto the pitas.
Add olives, green onions and finished off our personal pizzas with cheese.
Then place the baking sheet onto the middle rack of your oven. If you have smaller children, you may want to let them prepare their pizzas on a cutting board or plate, then transfer to the baking sheet.

Bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes until cheese has melted and starts to bubble.

You can add more or different toppings if you wish.
I have tried deli ham and pineapple or tuna, which are both
delicious options.
Keep in mind that you  have to increase baking time so all ingredients are heated thoroughly. Do not use raw meats like chicken or beef.

P.S. We have also served this Pita pizza at sleepovers and parties and they are always a hit with children and adults alike.

  8. If you have smaller children they can prepare their pizzas on a cutting board or plate, so your baking sheet will not get decorated in the process,
  9. Then place the baking sheet onto the middle rack of your oven.
  10. Bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes until cheese has melted and starts to bubble.
