Yonanas Best way to to eat Bananas

My girls and I don’t eat bananas. It’s not that we don’t like them.
To our taste buds they seem just a little but too dry and starchy.
But since bananas are healthy and are a good source of Vitamin C, Vitamin B and Magnesium I try to make them in Banana breads and muffins once in a while.
The downside is of course; you’ll have to add extra sugar, flour and therefore extra calories. It also it takes a bit of time to make and bake muffins and banana bread.

So when we went shopping at Walmart a few months ago I noticed a contraption called the “Yonanas” on the shelf that promised to make healthy   ice cream out of 100% fruits like bananas. I was intrigued, but obviously my first thoughts coming to mind were  “Impossible” and “Yeah, right.”
By that time, my kids had discovered this “ice cream machine”  as well. They were immediately excited and agreed that they would be eating Bananas and fruit every day if we PLEASE just buy this Yonanas machine.

I  had to admit it looked delicious and nutritious. I kept reading the instructions on the box, waiting for the catch. What, I didn’t have to add extra sugar, heavy cream. Did the machine require me to buy special artificial flavours or sweeteners?
It sure sounded a bit too good to be true. Being a natural skeptic, I placed the box back onto the shelf.

The next week I was shopping at Walmart again and this time the Yonanas was on sale for a whole $10 off.
We do enjoy a treat of ice cream a few times a month, and if there really was a way to make it healthier, I was now happy to give this a try. So, this time the Yonanas went into my cart and I hurried to the checkout.

Determined this machine would not suffer the same fate and collect dust in the basement as my “healthy donut maker” and other little “As Seen On TV” novelties did, I opened the box and we started the assembly right away.

yonanas parts

The Yonanas consists of the main unit and five parts, and they are super easy to assemble (video here)
For the first use, we cleaned all parts with warm soapy water. The chute, blade and plunger parts are even dishwasher safe.
The machine comes with its own recipe booklet and more can be found online.

To make a batch of Yonanas Ice cream you can use frozen

  • bananas
  • strawberries
  • mixed berries
  • mangoes
  • blueberries
  • or a mixture of bananas and berries
  • bananas and various (frozen) candies like Reese’s, Smarties, Caramels etc.

yonanas bananas

Picking the “perfect” bananas is very important.
They cannot be green (as pictured). I pick nice yellow ones, with a few brown spots.
The same type you would choose for baking. The upside is that they are often found on sale/ clearance as well.

When preparing the bananas, I recommend you peel bunch of them, place them on a baking sheets and freeze the bananas overnight.
The next day you can use 5 or 6 of the bananas for your recipes (or whatever you need) and place the other ones in a Tupperware container, back in the freezer.

That way, you always have frozen bananas, ready to be used when you feel like making a treat in a flash.

yonanas bananas and mixins

Take the six bananas (serves about 5 people) and leave them on a plate for about 8 minutes. They will defrost slightly and have the perfect  consistency to make ice cream.
If you leave them too long, the mixture will be a little soft.

Get a bowl ready and place it beneath the Yonanas spout.
Then turn on the machine and simply place one banana inside the chute. Gently push it down with the plunger and follow with the next banana.

This process is super fast and once you have used all the bananas, make sure to scoop up the rest from inside the machine.
There is quite a bit of “ice cream” between blade and rubber. It’s too good to waste, so make sure to add it into a bowl.
Then simply mix and scoop into bowls and serve.

Of course, you are wondering how does it taste?

yonanas desserts

The answer in short: It’s just Amazing!

I served it to my husband, and he did not want to believe it wasn’t ice cream.
It is super creamy, incredible delicious and taste rich. My daughter who hates eating bananas loves this treat.

So far  we have tried the berries Yonanas; Banana mixed with berries, Bananas, PB and Mixin’s and melon Yonanas.

We loved every one of them except the cantaloupe. It was so nasty that not even hubby would eat it. Maybe it ws not ripe enough, or maybe this fruit is unsuitable?

The Yonanas has become a favourite dessert in our home, and we especially enjoy the Yonanas with Mixin’s.

My kids love to add Reese’s pieces and a scoop of peanut butter (per recipe)
It tastes as good as Premium any ice cream, and it’s hard to believe it’s just bananas and a little candy.

Update:

Scroll down below and find out how you can receive a free Robax trial and discount.

My first bout with back problems started after our last move.
After packing, lifting and moving dozens upon dozens of boxes, it should have come as no surprise that my back went on a sudden and very painful “strike”. You know the feeling when it hurts to stand,  move or sit and don’t even try to get up!
I did grab a few acetaminophen, and they worked somewhat for the 4 hours or so. I was still fairly uncomfortable though especially at night.
Since I did not want to pop pill after pill, my pharmacist recommended the Robax HeatWraps with ThermaCare.
I prefer heat to ice when dealing with a sore back and have tried self-heating ointments, but did not like the odour and greasy feeling they left behind.
After applying, the Robax Heat wraps almost immediately relaxed my muscles and took my pain away.
I was amazed, at how fast and great the pads worked on this tough backache.
The heat from these pads is comfortable and not burning, and the wraps were hidden beneath clothing.
The first couple days I wore them through the day.
My favourite time to wear the heat wraps was at night, though, because they would provide pain relief all night.
Getting out of bed seemed a lot easier, after wearing the wraps, as my back muscles felt less stiff and not painful.
The Robax  HeatWraps even continued to provide pain relief for several hours after I removed them.
Since this time, I have used the Robax Heat wraps a few times and always an extra one in my medicine cabinet.
What’s your go-to remedy for dealing with back pain and have  you tried any heat wraps yet?

LÄRABAR Products: A Taste & Flavour Review of Larabar Snack Bars

Larabar Canada, Products Review:

larabar fruit and nuit bars and products review

How do Larabars compare to granola or protein bars and do they make a good snack?

Energy and Protein bars make a great quick snack, for school and on-the-Go. Browsing the Supermarket store this week, I picked up four different LÄRABAR products and decided to check out the ingredients and equally important give them a taste test.
In other words are they good for you and do they taste good?

Nutrition

First off, the thing I liked most is that LÄRABAR only uses natural, unsweetened fruits, nuts and flavours.
Each bar contains pure ingredients you actually know and there are no more than a total of nine ingredients in each bar.
That’s pretty much like making your own bars at home, without having to spend the time and effort.
The bars do not have added (refined) sugars and rely on the sweetness from dates and bananas.
So far, so good!
I read the nutrition labels and found the bars contain a moderate amount of protein  5g-7g per bar. (coming from nuts and seeds)

Compared to protein bars that range from 15 -25 grams that’s
on the low end. If you are looking a protein bar, I would recommend checking out the Larabar ALT bar instead, which contains 10g of pea protein. Still not a significant amount, but twice as much, as regular Larabar products.
Larabars have a fair quantity of fibre, ranging from 3g to 5g of fibre.

example:Chocolate Brownie bar

Cost

Another bonus was the cost of buying these bars. For this trial, I paid about $12 for a box of 5.
But you can buy them in bulk, as they come in boxes of 16 Bars and these
boxes are often found on sale.

Coupons & Discounts

On the www.larabar.ca site, I noticed a coupon offer you may enjoy.

larabar snack bars

Taste and Flavours

We tried all four of them and decided that Chocolate Brownie bar was the definite winner.
The Chocolate Brownie bar contains six ingredients, cocoa, chocolate chips, dates, walnuts and almonds.
The texture is light, and it’s deliciously chocolatey and satisfying.
I could easily replace the Larabar Chocolate Brownie for any. Sugary full fat baked brownies.
Some of the other bars we tasted did not fare as well.
The date paste in some of the bars did not blend as well for example in
the Coco Coconut Chew bars and I felt a little “musty” aftertaste.
These were my least favourite ones.
Another bar had an artificial aftertaste, which was surprising since all ingredients are natural.
I would buy the Chocolate Brownie bars again anytime.

Summary

In summary, Larabars do make a healthy and filling snack for on the go.
The ingredients are nutritious, tasty and filling.
It’s not a sugar-free snack, as the bars contain natural sugars, but
the dates do supply a good source of iron and fibre and the nuts add extra Vitamin E and healthy fats.
If you suffer from gluten and dairy allergies, the bars are suitable
as they are grain and dairy free.
For this reason, they can also be part of the Paleo diet.

If you are looking for an alternative to homemade snack bars, I am giving Larabars thumbs up, but recommend you taste test a few of them to find your favourite one.

Truvia Sweetener Review and Free Sample

Sugar seems to be a big No-No these days when it comes to healthy eating and staying on track with keeping your optimal weight.
Even my doctor recommended cutting out sugar and using natural alternatives.
Browsing the store shelves at my local grocery store, my eyes fell on Truvia, a natural product made with Stevia.
I decided to visit their website and gather more information about this calorie free alternative.
To my great delight, I also discovered they are currently offering a free sampling opportunity, and I requested my free sachets asap.
I will share my experience with this product once my free trial arrives.

If you’d like to get in on the review, here is the link to order your free Truvia products

About Truvia

Truvia is a sugar substitute. It was a product that was developed by the Coca Cola Company and Cargill and launched in 2008. Truvia is made from leaf extracts of the stevia plant along with erythritol (a sugar alcohol) and natural flavours.

Truvia is marketed as a tabletop sweetener, for example – added to beverages like coffee – and it can also be used in recipes. You’ll also find Truvia as the main sweetener in a number of beverages on the market, including Vitamin Water, Sprite Green, All Sport Naturally Zero, Blue Sky Free, Crystal Light Pure, Zevia soda, and some varieties of Odwalla juices.

Products

Truvia makes three different products. They’re all really just Truvia, but the difference is in how it is packaged and what it will be used for. For sweetening foods and beverages there are Truvia packets/sachets. These are convenient for on the go use and come in 40 count and 80 count boxes.

The second option is Truvia Sponable. This is a jar packaging designed for use at home where you can spoon out and sprinkle the amount of Truvia you want. One third a teaspoon of Truvia spoonable is the equivalent to one teaspoon of sugar.

Finally, Truvia sells a Baking Blend which is a packet that combines Truvia with sugar to use in your recipes. Even though there is real sugar inside, Truvia Baking Blend contains 75% fewer calories than if you used all sugar.

Recipes

You’ll find that you can substitute Truvia Baking Blend for sugar in just about all of your favorite recipes, but I also wanted to point out that the Truvia website has an excellent recipes page. You can view the recipes here. The left side allows you to search recipes. You can also browse recipes by product (Truvia Natural Sweetener or Truvia Baking Blend), Course (Beverages & Smoothies, Bread & Muffins, Breakfast, Cakes, Cookies & Bars, Coctails, Desserts, Main Dishes, Salads, and Side Dishes).

Truvia’s Safety

Truvia is safe to eat for most people, but it is possible to experience an allergic reaction. For example, Truvia is made from stevia – an herb – and therefore may cause a reaction in people who are allergic to plants like ragweed.

Some people also experience gastrointestinal side effects when ingesting Truvia. These side effects are related to the sugar alcohol ingredient, erythritol. While up to 90% of erythritol is absorbed by the small intestine and excreted in urine, small amounts can reach the large intestine and cause gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating and cramps. The symptoms are mild and brief, but if you experience them you may have to limit how much Truvia you consume each day/week.

Where Can I Buy Truvia

For a list of stores that carry Truvia, visit this page.

Contacting Truvia

John Frieda Colour Renew Tone Correcting Shampoo Review

John Frieda Colour Renew Tone Correcting Shampoo To The Rescue!

John Frieda to the Rescue

My natural hair colour is a medium brown with a tinge of red. A blend of mahogany and chestnut colour, which would look great if I had brown eyes and an olive complexion.
I don’t. My skin is fair, and my eyes are green and my hair makes me look 20 years older and gives my skin colour a pasty look.
I am sure; there must have been a genetic mix-up and I should have been a natural blonde because that’s the colour that suits me best. A medium golden blonde makes my skin glow and lights up my face.

So, looking in the mirror this Saturday morning these brown roots were screaming out to be dyed again. It was obvious, I was overdue for a new highlighting treatment!
I normally use a Frost & Glow Highlighting Kit (the one with the cap) for my hair, that blends my natural hair with nice blonde streaks for a vivid  look.
Unfortunately, this Saturday  I was pressed for time.
A trip to the Mall was planned, and I didn’t feel like the regular 30-minute pre-routine of putting on he cap and pulling  out strands of hair.
Today I decided it would take too much of my time and since the highlights looked great, why not just put the mixture all over my hair
for a nice uniform look?!

Brilliant idea. Nope! That was the first NO, NO!
With my regular  highlighting technique, I leave the colour on 45 minutes to set. But without the cap, the mixture started to burn after only 20 minutes on my scalp.
I checked the colour, and it looked lighter and I told myself,  well it doesn’t have to be too light. It surely would look nice just to have an overall  medium blonde.
So without waiting the extra 20 minutes, I went off into the shower! Second big NO, NO.

I wrapped my hair into a towel turban, got dressed and ready for the moment to take the towel off.
Always exciting this moment, when you are checking the mirror for your new hair colour right?

I shrieked when I saw my reflection in the  mirror. It’s ….. RED!
My daughter came running just to see what the excitement was all about.
She gave me a pitiful glance and agreed it was definitely red!
Trying to make me feel better she said “maybe will look better when it’s dry.” As that did not seem to cheer me up, she offered the advice  that
I could always colour it something else Wasn’t blue hot right now, with  Nicola Richie sporting a fashionable blue bob?
I couldn’t picture myself as a Hollywood Socialite, so I decided  there was only one thing left to do, ask for a second opinion.
We waited for my hair to dry and then I put my husband on the spot.
So here it goes.  Me: “What do you think of my new hair colour?”
He looked at me uneasily, not quite sure how to respond to this tricky question.
So he cheerfully replied:
“I think, you have a nice golden colour, Hun, it does not even look orange. Just niiice golden!”
I paused just for a second to absorb this new piece of information. Did he just say ORANGE????

Yep, I went to the mirror again and the dry hair had now most certainly turned into some orange brassy hair colour and
and it did not look flattering at all.

The trip to the Mall was cancelled and left with me pondering my choices.  Hiding 2 to 3 months under a baseball cap, or changing the colour again?

I did neither. I decided to wait a couple of days and maybe get used to this new person in the mirror.

I am glad that I did!
The very next day I received my free sample box from Sample Source (freebie), and I happily opened the box to check all the great goodies that were inside.  As always the box was filled with fabulous trial offers and I  found Quaker cereal bars,  tea packages and laundry detergent
And a three-day  hair shampoo sample from John Frida called brassy hair correction shampoo.
Wait a second, WHAT???

I couldn’t  believe it! Some Good Karma fairy must have been putting this package together for me as I was definitely meant to receive this sample at this very moment!

John frieda hair colour rescue shampoo

I read all the information and here is more about the product:

John Frieda Colour Renew Tone Correcting Shampoo With Optical Brightener & Lavender

•The formula, containing Colour-Correcting Technology, neutralizes brassy and yellow tones.
•Results are noticeable after just 3 uses.
•For all shades of colour-treated or highlighted blonde hair

I used it the first day and could not detect any difference at all. It still looked like yucky orange.

The second day after I dried my hair, some of the orange actually looked less orangy and maybe a little lighter. Was this just my imagination?

The third day was the charm!

angies hair after john fried colour renew
As I was looking in the mirror, I could clearly see the difference. A miracle.

Although my hair does not have it’s usual blonde, the brassy look has succumbed to  John Frieda’s Colour Renew Tone Correcting Shampoo.
If it could fix my big colour faux pas, I am sure it will do what it is meant to do, keep your Blonde hair colour looking it’s best!

Needless to say that I went out and bought a whole bottle of this stuff.
Just in case, because I think red is NOT for me, and orange should be reserved for clowns and maybe comedians like a Carrot Top.
Not even that.

Skotidakis Products

Skotidakis makes three types of dairy products – Greek yogurt, dips, and cheeses.

The Greek yogurt is sold in a number of different packages depending on how you like your yogurt. Packages include fruit on the side, fruit on the bottom (500 g), stirred (500 g) and the multipack. There are a number of flavours to tempt your taste buds, including blueberry & pomegranate, honey, strawberry, raspberry & cranberry, black cherry, peach, plain 0%, plain 2%, blueberry & pomegranate 0%, strawberry 0%, honey 0%, lemon 0%, black cherry 0%, raspberry & cranberry 0%, vanilla 0%, plain 9% and variety packs.

Dips

Skotidakis also makes a range of dips that are great for dipping your favorite vegetables, crackers or chips. The dips are made with Strained Greek Probiotic Yogurt and only have 50 calories per portion. Dips are available in jalapeno, tzatziki, French onion and ranch flavours.

Cheeses

Finally, Skotidakis also makes a number of cheese products that are derived from Mediterranean traditions. They include feta, crumbled feta, diced feta, cream cheese in a container, cream cheese in a brick, and ricotta cheese.

About Skotidakis

Skotidakis is a Canadian dairy brand. The company’s founder, Peter Skotidakis, purchased the dairy farm in 1975 with dreams of making and selling traditional Greek feta cheese – big dreams for a farm that originally only had 20 goats. The first Skotidakis products (feta and yogurt) were introduced to local markets and restaurants in Montreal and products have grown in popularity since then. The 1,500 acre Skotidakis foarm now has more than 3,000 goats.

Carnation Canada: Rich & Creamy Recipes

carnation recipes and products review

Creamy soups are one of my favourite appetizers.
I love the rich and full taste of a fresh homemade cream of leek, broccoli or potato soup.

My grandmother used to serve the most delicious pumpkin cream soup.
It’s base was made with butter, roasted onions and heavy cream and it was the perfect appetizer to our Thanksgiving dinners.
I have been trying to re-create some of her recipes using ingredients that are less “calorific” (as my daughters like to call them)
This is one of the reasons; I love to include Carnation evaporated cream into my soups.
Carnation evaporated cream takes an ordinary recipe and adds the velvety, creamy taste, that you’ll expect in richer soups.

About

Carnation Canada

Carnation Canada is an evaporated milk company that is part of the Smucker Foods of Canada Corporation, which Carnation joined in 2007. The Carnation brand is over a century old and comes in a red-and-white can. Evaporated milk is used in smoothies, as a base for soups, sauces, and casseroles, and can be used as whitener in coffee or tea. Evaporated milk can be used to substitute cream in many recipes.

Products

Carnation offers five products: evaporated milk, fat-free evaporated skim milk, evaporated two-percent partly skimmed milk, instant skim milk powder, and thick cream. On each product page, nutrition facts are found on the right-hand side, with a description and ingredients. A picture of the product is located on the left of the nutritional facts.

Recipes

The Recipes page can be navigated by the type of dish you want to make: beverage, breakfast/brunch, appetizer/snacks, dinner/main dishes, soups, or desserts. Each recipe section includes a description, title of the recipe, time it takes, and a rating of the recipe. Each recipe page includes preparation time, ingredients, tips, garnishes, and user-generated comments. You can even add a recipe to your “Favourites” page, share the recipe, or print it out for future use. For example, the Apple Cinnamon Crisp Smoothie is rated four out of five stars, takes 12 minutes to prepare, makes four cups, and uses the 2% or Fat-Free Evaporated Milk from Carnation. If you do not like seeing recipes in list form, Carnationmilk.ca makes videos of some recipes.

Videos

On the Videos page, found here, you have access to the recipe, related recipes, comments, and can share the recipe or add it to your favourites. In the Simple White Sauce video, Trish Magwood takes you through the recipe. She gives step-by-step information while performing each action.
