Easy DIY Fall Decorations
Where did the summer go?
Coming home last night, I noticed, “gasp” the first leaves had already turned colour and after a few rain storms my flower baskets on the front porch are looking less than cheerful.
So I decided it’s time for some redecorating and getting ready for fall!
Why not celebrate the upcoming arrival of fall through simple decor you can use in your home. By adding just a few inexpensive and easy items here and there, it’s incredible how it can change the look and feel of a room. Let’s take a look at some exciting ways you can bring the fall season indoors.
Hold Back and Evaluate
First things first, when adding decor items to your home it’s very easy to want to pick up all kinds of items that you’ve seen in magazines or on decorating shows, but if you go overboard you’ll actually prevent the changes from making an impact. It’s incredible how just a few simple pieces can spice up a space and change the look because they will become the focal point, which is exactly what you want. There’s also the fact that if you’re not conscious of what you’re picking up you could end up spending an awful lot of money, and there is really no need. Don’t forget what you find stylish and trendy this fall may not be the same for next year.
Look to Nature
Fall is a wonderful time of year to look to nature for decor inspiration as it is filled with beautiful rich and earthy hues that work so well in homes. They can make a space feel warm, inviting, and comfortable. What comes to mind when you think of fall? For many people it’s the beautiful leaves, warm fragrant spices cooking in the kitchen, pinecones, acorns, gourds, multi-coloured corn, pumpkins, and of course fall mums. All of these nature inspired items can be used in your home in really cool and fun ways, and the beauty of it is that you can do it in pretty inexpensive ways.

A Fall-Inspired Centrepieces
You don’t have to be hosting a big family gathering such as Thanksgiving to add a centrepiece to your table. In fact, this can act as that lovely touch in your kitchen or dining room that represents the change in season. A very inexpensive idea that has plenty of drama and impact is to create your centrepiece with items you have collected or picked up in a crafting store. As well many of the dollar type stores now carry the items you’ll need, making the cost of this craft extremely reasonable.
First you will need either a large glass bowl or vase. Steer away from coloured glass as it will make it harder to view the items you place inside. I found some beautiful glass vases at the Dollar Store and each one of them only costs between $2 or $3. Even smaller ones for a $1 each would look beautiful on the bathroom or kitchen counter.
Next you’ve got a couple of options here, you can get really creative and head out on a beautiful fall hike, or the backyard (if you are lucky) and pick up items such as pine cones and acorns that you find or you can purchase them instead. Next fill your bowl or vase with the items, be sure to fill it right up, so you create that sense of “plentiful,” a common theme at this time of year.
This centrepiece would also work on the fireplace mantle, and you could do a grouping of three. If you opt for a grouping picking, different sized vases will add drama and interest. Another great place to display your centrepiece is on a coffee table or a table in the front entrance.
If you’d rather, you can choose to use fruit in your centrepieces. Some options include pears, peaches, and apples which are all in season right now and feature all the beautiful colours of fall.
Create Festive Planters
Pumpkins are another item that truly represents fall. Why not make a decorative planter for your front porch out of these very inexpensive items? You can find pumpkins in a variety of shapes, sizes, and even colours. Pick a variety of them and then cut the top off and scoop out the insides. Next you can place an arrangement of fall coloured flowers inside the pumpkin. They can even be fresh clipped flowers from your own garden. As they dry, they will take on a new look and be just as beautiful.
Fill Your House with Fragrance
One of the most noticeable things is the smell in the home and filling the house with beautiful smells can be a very inviting thing. Why not jazz up those rather plain pillar candles you have in a fall-themed way. You’ll need a thick pillar candle that is unscented, be sure you have a stand or dish to place it on. Next pick up a package of fresh cinnamon sticks and a spool of twine. Take the cinnamon sticks and start to place them side by side, standing up, all around the candle. When you have circled the whole candle in cinnamon sticks, you can tie it in place with the twine. As your candle burns, it will give off the beautiful scent of cinnamon, and this also makes for a gorgeous piece to display.
A Welcome Wreath
Of course fall is a wonderful time to hang a wreath at your front door or even above your fireplace. Wreaths are a beautiful decor item that really allows you to work with the colours of the season as well as add your own touches, so they work with your space. You can, of course, make a unique wreath from scratch and collect the items you want to place on it, or you can purchase a wreath wire frame that you can then add your touches too. Any craft or dollar type store stocks such items as leaves, pinecones, acorns, ribbons, artificial flowers and fruits, cinnamon sticks, baby gourds and pumpkins, small multi-coloured corns of cob, and anything else that comes to mind.
When doing this project a heavy-duty crafting hot glue gun is your best friend and will ensure the items stay in place. That or you can purchase wire that will allow you to put the items exactly where you want them on the wreath.
Conclusion
There is no right or wrong when it comes to fall decor the whole idea is to bring all the beautiful colours and items found in nature into your home and really celebrate the season with family and friends.
